The Viper and His Famous Orchestra Kids Show

The Viper and His Famous Orchestra will be doing a show for the kids at the Orpheum Children's Science Museum on Sunday, July 11, starting at 1:30 p.m.

And the meat of the sandwich will be a build-your-own-instrument instructional section with The Viper and His Famous Orchestra. There will be two sets at 1:30 and 2:30.

One lucky child will go home with a freshly put-together washtub bass. Check out this YouTube video of the washtub instructions!

The Viper and his ukulele have wowed 'em with four strings and the truth from Ankara, Turkey to Urbana, Illinois, scatting, crooning, and yodeling their way through the last 150 years of popular (and not so popular) music. He and His Famous Orchestra have defined the neo-skiffle uke-and-suitcase middle-Midwestern sound for two millennia now.

Orpheum Theatre Rentals

In a time when older buildings are often overlooked, our goal is the preservation and successful reuse of the building as a Museum and a community resource. Our efforts will continue to add vitality to downtown Champaign, enhancing it as an attractive location for families and businesses. Our future plans include creating multi-functional use of the theatre. We will hold performances, weddings and receptions, community events, travelling educational exhibits, and art installations such as the Artist Against Aids show in April 2010. We will begin hosting weddings and events in the theatre in Spring, 2010. For more information, contact Deborah.

Renovations in Our Historic Theatre

The renovations continue in our beautiful Orpheum Theatre. Throughout the summer, we have been stabilizing the ceiling, repairing ornamental moulding and drywall, and painting the theatre with a historic color scheme. Contributions are still needed to fund the needed work on the facade, and your money will still be doubled due to our National Park Service matching grant.

Federal Grant Helps Us LEAP

Thanks to a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) the Orpheum will develop a new educational program called the Learning Environmental Awareness Program, or LEAP for short.

The program will be developed over 3 years and will be geared towards educating middle-school aged children about environmentalism and material consumption. As we begin this exciting new project we will keep you informed about these educational programs and new opportunities for volunteers to participate in this endeavor.
