CASTLE WORKALOT

Step back in time to a medieval world of castles, knights, queens, kings, and simple machines in the newest exhibit at OCSM. You'll have hands-on fun playing, exploring, and creating with simple machines and building structures in a real castle. Castle Workalot is where inhabitants only work a little, as simple machines cleverly bear the burden of the load.

Miniature Castle: Re-create yourself (as a castle character), then take rule of the scaled castle complete with drawbridge, dragon's lair, and moat. As the royal engineer, move water through the land with pulleys, gears, levers, and wheels.

Carpenter's Workshop: A declaration has been made for engineers of the royal court to build a strong and sturdy bridge to span the royal steps and to build flying buttresses.

Amazing Levers: Amaze yourself with what can happen when levers, balls, and gravity meet. Can you change the path of the ball to avoid the dungeon?

Pulley Pull: Try lifting different weights of flour bags and see how pulleys can make lifting much, much easier.

Blacksmith Shop: Even the smallest of carpenters can build with tools and participate in different trades and jobs important to life in a castle.

Royal Dining and Kitchen: Explore and work with simple machines in everyday castle life. Cook on the hearth and accomplish everyday tasks with pulleys, levers, and gears.

Giant Lever has returned to the museum floor.
Walk out on the 14' foot lever arm marked with different body weights. When you reach your weight, the lever arm will be level and you will have balanced the 300 pounds (!) of lead in the end of the lever. The less you weigh, the the further you must walk.
S.S. Ackermann Tugboat
An interactive river simulation takes visitors on a Mississippi River Trip. The tugboat allows young visitors opportunities to explore a tugboat.
